THE FAMILY NAME

Baxter is an occupational name, meaning "a female baker", and comes from the Old English word "baecestre" which is the feminine of "baecere", baker.

Early records show a Liueger se Bacestere in Devonshire in 1093; a Hanne Bakestre is listed in the Assize Rolls in Cheshire in 1260. The name Baxter is very popular in Anglian counties.

Our ancient family motto was Vincit Veritas, "Truth conquers".
